Lockheed Receives Contract for Qatar Apache Targeting and Pilotage Systems

Lockheed Martin (LMT) received a $90.6 million foreign military sale contract from the U.S. Army to provide Modernized Target Acquisition Designation Sight/Pilot Night Vision Sensor (M-TADS/PNVS) systems to the Qatar Emiri Air Force. Qatar marks the 14th international customer for the M-TADS/PNVS system.

Fielded in 2005, M-TADS/PNVS provides Apache pilots with long-range, precision engagement and pilotage capabilities for safe flight during day, night and adverse weather missions. Lockheed Martin has delivered more than 1,250 M-TADS/PNVS systems and spares to the U.S. Army and international customers.

The Qatar sale is an option under the U.S. Army’s Lot 9 contract, awarded to Lockheed Martin in May. The option includes production of M-TADS/PNVS targeting and pilotage systems and spares for the Qatar Emiri Air Force’s new fleet of AH-64E Apache attack helicopters. It extends production in Orlando and Ocala, Florida, through 2017.

“The Qatar Emiri Air Force will be one of the first international customers to receive M-TADS/PNVS systems equipped with the new Modernized Laser Range Finder Designator,” said Mike Taylor, Apache international programs director at Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control. “The new Laser Range Finder Designator is more than two times more reliable, improves targeting performance and can be repaired or replaced on the flight line, which significantly reduces operation and support costs.”

Raytheon, US Army certify TALON Laser-Guided Rocket on Apache helicopter

Air worthiness release certification moves program toward operational employment

Raytheon Company (NYSE: RTN) and the U.S. Army have completed the certification process for air worthiness release (AWR) of the TALON Laser-Guided Rocket (LGR) on the Apache AH-64D/E Attack helicopter. The AWR certification provides for potential operational employment of the TALON weapon system on U.S. Army Apaches and Apaches in international fleets.

The TALON LGR is a low-cost, digital semi-active laser guidance and control kit co-developed with the United Arab Emirates. TALON integrates directly to the front of the legacy 2.75-inch Hydra-70 unguided rockets.

“With completion of the AWR, we can offer Apache customers an affordable guided-rocket solution that provides capability within the current Hydra-70 rocket firing envelope,” said Darryl Kreitman, Raytheon TALON program director. “TALON’s architecture and ease of employment make it a low-cost, highly precise weapon for missions in urban environments, counter insurgency and swarming boat defense missions.”

TALON requires no hardware or software modifications to the launcher or aircraft platform and can be fired from any aircraft that fires 2.75-inch Hydra-70 unguided rockets using the standard M260/261 launchers.

UK to Upgrade Apache Helicopter Fire Control

LONGBOW International, a joint venture of Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman, received a $96 million contract in 2013 from AgustaWestland to support LONGBOW Fire Control Radars on U.K. Apache AH Mk.1 aircraft.

The five-year contract includes engineering services, integrated logistics support and an in-country repair capability. The effort is part of the overall Integrated Operational Support solution for the U.K. Apache helicopter fleet provided by AgustaWestland to the U.K. Ministry of Defence. Support services under this contract will continue through March 2019.

“LONGBOW International will provide comprehensive services to sustain fire control radars equipping the British Army’s fleet of Apache helicopters,” said Tom Eldredge, LONGBOW International’s president and director of LONGBOW programs at Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control. “Our strong partnership with AgustaWestland enables us to provide high operational availability and system reliability at low overall costs in support of the U.K. Ministry of Defence.”

For over a decade, the LONGBOW radar system has provided Apache aircrews with automatic target detection, location, classification and prioritization and enabled rapid, multi-target engagement in all weather, over multiple terrains and through battlefield obscurants.

“This contract provides high-quality logistics engineering and affordable repairs support for the U.K. Ministry of Defence, ensuring supply availability,” said Mike Galletti, LONGBOW International’s vice president and director of Northrop Grumman’s Tactical Sensor Solutions-Aviation business unit. “We are pleased to maintain our strong relationship with AgustaWestland and provide a steady base of support to the U.K. Apache LONGBOW helicopters.”

Work will be performed at the U.K. Wattisham Airfield Special Repair Activity Depot; Northrop Grumman’s Baltimore, Md., facility; Lockheed Martin facilities in Ocala and Orlando, Fla.; and LMUK Ampthill in the U.K.

Test Flight of the Modernized Day Sensor Assembly on the AH-64E Apache Attack Helicopter

Team Apache Sensors, including the U.S. Army Apache Attack Helicopter Project Management Office, the U.S. Army Aviation Flight Test Directorate and Lockheed Martin, conducted a test flight of the Apache AH-64E Modernized Day Sensor Assembly (M-DSA) during an event at Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, Ala., yesterday.

The test flight demonstrated the maturity of M-DSA and the enhanced capabilities it brings to the Modernized Target Acquisition Designation Sight/Pilot Night Vision Sensor (M-TADS/PNVS), the precision targeting and pilotage system for the AH-64D/E Apache helicopter.

“We are looking forward to the reliability and maintainability improvements that this laser will bring to the M-TADS system,” said Lt. Col. Steven Van Riper, U.S. Army Apache Sensors Product Manager. “This system will help to further reduce the burden on our aircrews, and they will be able to reap the benefits of the performance improvements.”

M-DSA increases M-TADS/PNVS designation and ranging capabilities to fully accommodate current weapons and those planned for the future. The upgraded sensor enables Apache pilots to see high-resolution, high-definition near infrared and color imagery on cockpit displays.

An additional field of view allows image blending with the M-TADS forward-looking infrared, and enables pilots to see civilian and military lighting on a single display more clearly.

M-DSA also provides a new laser pointer marker that improves coordination with ground troops and an updated multi-mode laser with eye-safe lasing capability that supports flight in urban environments and critical training exercises.

“M-DSA completes the modernization of the M-TADS/PNVS,” said Matt Hoffman, M-TADS/PNVS director at Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control.

“The new capabilities provided by M-DSA, such as color in the cockpit and an enhanced laser pointer marker, will support rapid target identification and coordination, as well as improve safety and system reliability for U.S. Army Apache aircrews.”

Lockheed Martin, the Apache Program Office and the Army Flight Test Directorate will spend the next few months validating M-DSA capabilities at Redstone Arsenal and Yuma Proving Grounds.

Fielded in 2005, the M-TADS/PNVS system provides Apache attack helicopter pilots with long-range, precision engagement and pilotage capabilities for mission success and flight safety in day, night and adverse weather missions.

Forward-looking infrared sensors provide enhanced image resolution that enable Apache aircrews to query targets and provide situational awareness in support of ground troops outside detection ranges. Lockheed Martin has delivered more than 1,200 M-TADS/PNVS systems to the U.S. Army and international customers.

Solopos.com, SEMARANG – Menteri Pertahanan Purnomo Yusgiantoro mengatakan Mabes TNI AD telah mengajukan tambahan anggaran khusus senilai Rp6 triliun untuk pembelian sejumlah helikopter serang Apache dari Amerika Serikat beserta persenjataannya.

”Pemerintah Amerika Serikat sudah menyetujui pembelian helikopter Apache. Sekarang sedang proses negosiasi harga,” ungkap di Semarang, Sabtu (29/6/2013).

Sebab harga satu unit helikopter Apache sangat mahal yakni senilai US$40 juta atau sekitar Rp388 miliar. ”Saat ini tim khusus dari Kementerian Pertahanan dan Mabes TNI AD, sedang melobi pemerintah Amerika Serikat mengenai harga helikopter Apache,” imbuhnya.

Keberadaan skadron Apache itu, kata Menhan, untuk melengkapi kekuatan militer Indonesia dalam menjaga kedaulatan negara.


”Selain TNI AD, TNI Angkatan Laut juga menyiapkan helikopter antikapal selam dan membuat armada perusak kawal rudal,” ujarnya.

Army updates ‘eyes’ of Apache helicopters

The Army is incorporating a new sensor capability into its Apache helicopters.

The Apache Sensors Product Office has accepted delivery of the new Modernized Day Sensor Assembly Laser Rangefinder Designator, or LRFD, the first component to be fielded in the Modernized Day Sensor Assembly.

The laser represents increased capability to the Modernized Target Acquisition Designation Sight/Pilot Night Vision Sensor, known as the “eyes of the Apache.”

“This laser kit, what we call M-DSA phase one, is an investment by the Army and the Program Executive Office for Aviation, and we’re looking forward to the reliability and maintainability improvements that this laser will bring to the MTADS system,” Lt. Col. Steven Van Riper, product manager for Apache Sensors, said during a media teleconference June 6. “The maintainers will have less of a burden when it comes to keeping the system up and fully operational, while our aircrews will be able to reap the benefits of the performance improvements.”

Van Riper added that the focus with M-DSA is the Apache Sensors Product Office’s obsolescence mitigation program, which started about three years ago.

The modernized LRFD is the first phase of upgrades for the M-DSA program. The modernized LRFD mitigates obsolescence and provides enhanced performance to the MTADS/PNVS system.

The legacy laser, built with 1970s/1980s technology, was developed with a tactical wavelength in the system, and involves a high maintenance cost for the Army. The new laser incorporates a second EyeSafe wavelength, the newest technology available. It replaces the old flash lamp technology to a more reliable, more robust diode pump laser technology.

The diode pump is the primary driver of increasing the Army’s reliability and maintainability numbers, thereby reducing the burden on flight line maintainers. The Army expects to have a smaller footprint, thereby reducing operations and sustainment costs by as much as 50 percent throughout the life cycle of the entire kit. This means that the Army will need to buy fewer spare parts, due to the new system’s reliability.

Phase one will be fielded later this year and will be fully capable by 2016, according to Matt Hoffman, director of MTADS/PNVS programs at Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control.

“The MDSA is the chief targeting aide for the Apache and establishes range-to-target for accurate weapons engagement,” Hoffman said.

Completion of the second phase, scheduled to begin in 2016, will include all the remaining elements in the DSA such as a high definition color television, laser pointer marker, upgraded laser spot tracker, and a state-of-the-art inertia measuring unit for stability and extended range in the system.

“We are meeting all of our milestones in terms of production ramp rate, moving towards maintaining our production rate of over 20 lasers per month,” Van Riper said. “We’re stepping up to that incrementally using a very deliberate production engineering process.”

The M-DSA will have the same fit and form as the legacy laser to ensure that the Army has a retrofittable laser into all its legacy systems.

The Army’s goal is to retrofit the M-DSA and equip the AH-64E Apache units first.

“We’re going to move through the fleet as quickly as we can based on our battalion fielding plan,” Van Riper said. Fielding will be based on rotational and deployment schedules of those units.

“When we’re able to have a full kit of MLRFDs to cover all aircraft assigned to a battalion, we will take a fielding team to the location and execute the fielding as quickly as possible without disrupting that unit’s operational tempo and training plan,” Van Riper explained.

The first unit to be equipped is scheduled for June 2014.

New Laser Range Finders for Apache Helicopter

Lockheed Martin recently delivered the first Modernized Day Sensor Assembly (M-DSA) Laser Range Finder Designator (LRFD) to the U.S. Army for the AH-64D/E Apache helicopter.

“The new laser is the first component to be fielded in the Modernized Day Sensor Assembly,” said Lt. Col. Steve Van Riper, U.S. Army product manager of Apache Sensors. “The U.S. Army looks forward to a lasting relationship with the Lockheed Martin and Selex team; we anticipate continued success as we quickly ramp-up to our planned production rate and begin fielding.”

The modernized LRFD is the first phase of upgrades for the M-DSA program. The modernized LRFD mitigates obsolescence and provides enhanced performance to the Modernized Target Acquisition Designation Sight/Pilot Night Vision Sensor (M-TADS/PNVS) system. The modernized LRFD is also the chief targeting aid for the Apache, establishing the range to target for accurate weapon aiming.

The M-DSA second phase upgrades bring color to the Apache cockpit display, improving situational awareness and communication with ground troops.

“This milestone represents a highly successful team effort that provides significant benefit to the Apache pilot through system reliability, maintainability and performance,” said Matt Hoffman, director of M-TADS/PNVS programs at Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control. “With more than 685 modernized LRFD kits on contract, this milestone signifies Lockheed Martin’s ability to deliver on its commitment to supporting the soldier.”
